How does Explorer know where you are? The Museum has placed more than 700 Bluetooth beacons throughout its 45 permanent halls. These tiny beacons give off signals that your phone can detect (when Bluetooth is enabled). Your phone calculates your position based on detecting three of these beacons simultaneously. This triangulation is not always perfect, especially in certain areas like large, multi-level halls, meandering walkways, or stairwells. Your phone should be able to detect the hall that you are in and provide turn-by-turn directions, but sometimes the “blue dot” is not exactly in the right place. In some rare cases it will even be missing. Moving to another area and waiting a few moments will usually fix the issue.

The Museum’s free AMNH-GUEST Wi-Fi also varies in strength throughout the complex. Certain materials and large exhibits (i.e. the Blue Whale) either absorb or reflect the radio signals used by Wi-Fi, further complicating this technology. If you experience difficulty connecting to Wi-Fi in a particular part of the Museum, you can usually fix the issue by moving a short distance away.

That is one of my most favorite apps. Easy to use, fun and very informative. This app makes your visit at the museum very comfortable

This app is a must-have when visiting the museum! It is filled with easy to use maps, a list of popular museum exhibits, pre-planned tours of varying durations and more. Using the museums free wi-fi service, the app can locate you in the museum and give you step-by-step directions to get wherever you want to go.

Helped us a lot on our travels, the Bluetooth location feature is ingenious!

Plusses: great facts, helpful ticket system, good directions when functional Negatives: takes a while to load location, avatour doesnt work, they should add a feature that makes a to-do list for your visit based on location, budget, schedule, abilities, interests and likes

This app is great. Its nice that it shows you nearby things that you might be interested in. The ability to get step by step directions to anywhere you want really came in handy, too.

Some bad moments

Why has it app any other languages besides English? With us in Germany, also all in multiple languages is made for visitors.

I spent about 30 min waiting for this ap to run and all it did was was give me the spinning clocking indicator. They have free wifi on site which runs great but the ap was useless to me.

Could not find any basic info on AMNH, just cutesy suggestions for what to look for. No hours, no ticket prices, no list of current exhibitions.

Also, the storing of locations that you want to find does not match up with the actual map. Finally just turned it off

The maps and gps features make navigating through the museum really easy!

It was my first trip to the museum and I was so overwhelmed! About halfway threw my trip I thought they might have an app. Using the museums free wifi I downloaded it. It was fantastic! I loved the turn by turn directions and the explanations about the exhibits were great especially when the exhibit was crowded.
